Baron's ... They
weren't married
then, says Shirley,
being wed later in
California ... And
for sure, she says,
they did not enter-
tain in South
Haven.
The first hotels were originally
farm resorts with rooms for rent, but
no dining rooms or big entertainment
Fidelman's, Zlatkin's, Gassi n's,
Richard's, Weinstein's, Mendelson's
Atlantic; etc.
Shirley tells of going with her
mother and father to Grossinger's in
the New York Catskills... to learn
with them about the resort theme ...
social director, physical director, etc ...
and brought the idea to South Haven
... Baron's, she says, was the first with
entertainment ... Buddy Lester,
Barton Brothers, Jewish shows from
Chicago, etc. ... plus a five-piece
orchestra every night for dancing.
South Haven really hopped with ...
Mendelson's Atlantic, Mendelson's
Oakland (no relation,) and Biltmore,
on North Shore; Fidelman's on
Phoenix Road, about five miles out of
town; Samson's (formerly Richard's),
across the street from Baron's, about
two miles out of town on U.S. 31,
etc.
Dave Mendelson's Oakland was
next with entertainment, says Shirley
... Ben Teitel came from Detroit to
marry Dave's daughter, Harriet, and
modernized Oakland.
Shirley remembers Cohen's Bakery,
owned by Pauline Cohen; Reznick's
Butcher Shop and City Grocery ...
there along with A & P.
"Today," says Shirley, "South
Haven is a marina with condomini-
ums. No more wonderful Jewish
resorts that bring back so many great
memories."
THIS DEC. 15 will be 25 years
for Capraro's Italian restaurant on
John R and Maple in Troy ... but now
under the ownership of popular Chris
Anastasiou, former boss-gal at Vassili's
on Southfield ... Same chef at
Capraro's for 15 years, Daniel Merlot,
still puts out the traditional Italian
dishes, plus broiled salmon, swordfish,
pickerel and fried perch ... As before,
Capraro's makes its own bread daily
and continues to properly put olive
oil on the table for bread-dipping.
THE LOVE AFFAIR started at last
year s Labor Day Picnic given annual-
ly by Irene and Nate Light.
