PRESENTING ANOTHER GREAT

SHIRLEE BLOOM

THANKSGIVING MENU

"The caisson comes up and the
band plays the national anthem," he
says. "She bent down, whispered in
[John Jr.'s] ear. His hand went up and
it went down. One exposure, that's all I
got. And I knew I had the picture of
the funeral. I asked every photographer
there, 'Did you see the salute?' They
didn't know what I was talking about."
Instead of heading to the burial at
Arlington National Cemetery as
assigned, Stearns put his job on the
line and returned to the office to
develop the film. The next day, his
photograph ran on the front pages of
newspapers around the world and on
a full page in the New York Times. "I
was a hero," he says.

The death of JFK
Jr. in July brought
renewed attention
to the 'John-John'
salute picture and
the photographer
who shot it.

Although Stearns won first prize
from both ale National Press
Photographers Association and the
White House News Photographers
Association, he says he lost the Pulitzer
Prize by one vote to the Dallas photog-
rapher who snapped Jack Ruby shoot-
ina Lee Harvey Oswald.
b When Stearns - who won $25
from a monthly UPI contest -
approached his boss about a bonus,
"[My boss] said, 'That's your job,"' he
recalls. "So I got bubkis [nothing]."
Six years later, Stearns served as
president of the WHNPA. He left UPI
in 1970 to become a freelance maga-
zine photographer, then opened his
own studio the following year. In the
corner of Stearns' Annapolis portrait
studio hangs his most compelling
image: a collage of his photographs
that includes a weary President Lyndon
Baines Johnson, a pensive Robert F.
Kennedy and, of course, John F.
Kennedy Jr.'s famous salute.
"There are days when I really miss
it," he says. "I ate my heart out, espe-
cially when Nixon went to China. But
you are where you are until you get
somewhere else. I was gutsy in those
days and I'm still gutsy." Fl
