time ... Mert Segal looking at his watch
and leaving to catch Ricky Martin at
the Palace ... Abe Pearlman, celebrating
over 20 years of retirement from den-
tistry and loving it even more when his
golf game is on ... Joe Cornell, here for
inductee Alan Rothenberg, now a real
estate tycoon in California ... but still
one of the West Coast's top ballroom
dancers ... He and wife, Kathie, live in
Sherman Oaks ... Cantor Steve Dubov
of Temple Beth-El, excellent on
"Hatikva" ... and Karen Newman, the
little gal with the big voice, her usual
goodness on "The Star-Spangled
Banner."
The annual induction dinner was
again a showpiece for Paul Kohn,
kosher caterer and head of La
Difference restaurant ... with various
food stations serving lineups of hungry
folks ... Japanese, Chinese, French,
American and Jewish goodies at nine
stations and two carts (hamburgers and
hot dogs) ... including soups, deli, poul-
try; potatoes, strudels, salads, Asian
favorites, lettuce wraps and desserts.
COMEDY COMES to Andiamo
West, Telegraph and 15 Mile,
Wednesday, Nov. 24 ... with Jeff Pirrani
and Mike Young doing their funny
stand-up bits for a lot of laughs ... Doors
to what general manager and partner
Jerry Vitale calls his "Comedy Cellar"
downstairs for this show, open at 7, with
the guffaws starting at 8 ... Make reser-
vations by calling (248) 865-9300.
At Andiamo Italia's Celebrity
Showroom on 14 Mile Road in
Warren, Sam Butera was splendid in
showing that he has lost very little, if
any, of his great touch as a super
entertainer.
Sam's recent show as the act before
The Platters, was sensational ... So
much so that many in the audience
couldn't see Sam and The Wildest as an
opening act ... The show of Sam Butera
and The Platters was as close to a Las
Vegas performance as you'll witness.
At 74, Butera still has it, and is a
lively jive cat with plenty of exciting
rhythm ... Rarely will you ever find an
ensemble that's more "together" than
Sam Butera and The Wildest ...
Whether he and the band are ram-
bling through some Louis Prima
charts or cooking up some of his own
arrangements, Butera and company
know precisely what the audience
wants and then delivers the product in
an entertaining package ... Sam vocal-
izes and plays a mean sax.
The Platters, doing gold-record
charts of its great hits, put on a good
show ... enjoyed by packed audiences
on all three nights. 11
