HELPING HAND from page 12

THE PREMIER RET
COMMUNITY

can expect a package of health and
hygiene items in addition to a nutri-
tionally balanced food package.
This year's dinner raised
$400,000. Contributions account for
most of the agency's current budget
revenue of 5760,000.
Every month the Yad Ezra staff
led by co-directors Lea Luger and
Elaine Ryke, warehouse supervisor
Bernie Phillips and 150 volunteers
— dispenses free food packages with
a smile to 1,800 people. Client
income is verified but kept confiden-
tial.
Said Eizelman: "Our clients are
treated with dignity and every indi-
vidual is judged in a favorable light,
which exemplifies our view that the
first question asked is not 'How
much do you make?' but 'Are you
hungry?'"
He paid homage to the volunteers
— from teens to retirees — who
stock shelves, distribute food, make
deliveries and do paperwork. "They
are truly the lifeblood of our organi-
zation," he said, "and they do it self-
lessly.
Added Irving Nusbaum: "They are
the real honorees tonight. They are
the ones who reallygive. They give
their precious time, on Sundays
when the rest of us are relaxing at
home. They give their helping hands
to handle food, to pack boxes and to
hold the hands of those they serve.
They give their smiles, to bring com-
fort and reassurance and dignity to
those who come to them in need.
They give their whole selves, devot-
edly and sincerely, to perform this
act of kindness."
To care, Nusbaum said, is "the
essence of our Jewish faith," the
upshot of tikkun olam (repairing the
world). "Our small Detroit Jewish
community cannot repair the world
alone," he said, but it does take care
of its own.
"The funds will be raised, however
daunting the amounts seem to be,"
he said. "If we care, it will be done.
We will not fail. We never have."
Introducing the Nusbaums,
Robert Aronson, chief executive offi-
cer of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, said: "There is
a theme to their involvement and
their many causes, and that theme is
caring for the vulnerable, the power-
less and the needy among us. This is
a fundamental principle and the
highest priority of Jewish giving —
and it is the guiding principle behind
everything that Barbara and Irving
do." TT
