Hebrew Courses
Congregation Shir Tikvah will par-
ticipate in the campaign aimed at
teaching North American Jews to
read Hebrew beginning Sunday,
Oct. 24.
Conceived and orchestrated by the
national Jewish Outreach Program,
"Read Hebrew America/Canada" is
expected to reach affiliated and unaf-
filiated Jews in the U.S. and Canada.
Open to the community, this
Hebrew reading crash course focuses
on teaching the Hebrew alphabet
and basic reading skills to Jews with
little or no background in the lan-
guage. Classes will meet from 11
a.m.-noon Sunday mornings at
Congregation Shir Tikvah. There is
no charge.

Women's Forum
Suze Orman, author of The Courage
to be Rich, which debuted in the top
spot on the New York Times bestseller
list, will speak 11:45 a.m. Tuesday,
Nov. 2, at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek. This is the inaugural event of
the Jewish Women's Foundation of
Metropolitan Detroit.
Orman appears regularly on the
QVC cable network as host of her
own Financial Freedom hour. Before
establishing the Suze Orman
Financial Group in 1987, Orman, a
certified financial planner profession-
al, served as vice president of invest-
ments for Prudential Bache
Securities.
The Women's Foundation, a pro-
gram of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, is being built
by $10,000 and $100,000 contribu-
tions to an endowment fund solely
dedicated to the foundation's mis-
sion.
Eligible for funding from the new
foundation are groups that focus on
medical research, the arts, religious
and secular activities, and education
for women of all ages.
Margot Halperin chairs the Jewish
Women's Foundation. There is a $25
fee for the luncheon-program, which
is sponsored by Northern Trust
Bank.
