Barbara Rabkin, international presi-
dent-elect of Jewish Women
International, will be the keynote
speaker when Metropolitan Detroit
Council of JWI holds its annual
Special Gifts Luncheon Wednesday,
Nov. 3, at Adat Shalom Synagogue. At
the event, the coun-
cil's 1999 Woman of
Achievement Award
will be presented to
Charlotte Edelheit.
Rabkin, a 25-year
member of JWI, is
chair of the national
Leadership
Barbara Rabkin Development team,
which is responsible
for training promising volunteer lead-
ers for the organization's future. A
leading advocate for women, Rabkin
has been a major spokesperson for JWI
on breaking the cycle of violence. As a
vice president, she served as chair of
the national program team and was
instrumental in the publication of the
Rabbis Resource Guide on Domestic
Violence.
Rabkin has served as national chair
of JWI's Jewish Family Task Force,
chaired the 1992 JWI Biennial
Convention in Chicago and, in 1993,
was co-chair of the first Kennedy
Center gala honoring Hilary Rodham
Clinton as a Woman of Valor for her
work on behalf of the nation's chil-
dren.
Lucille Gersten, international vice
president for JWI, will serve as 1999
special gifts chair. She is a past regional
chair, past president of the
Metropolitan Detroit Council and past
president of Centennial Chapter.
Luncheon co-chairs are Ida Nathan
and Esther Applebaum. They are past
prsidents of JWI Metropolitan Detroit
Council.
Sisterhood Hosts
Havdala Service
Congregation Shir Tikvah Sisterhood
will host its annual Havdala service
6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, as part of
the new member weekend.
The service will be prepared and led
by Pam Spitzer, a sisterhood member
and member of the congregation's
board of trustees. Following the ser-
vice, sisterhood will serve hors d'oeu-
vres while sisterhood member Diane
Katz provides Klezmer music.
