Divorce Support Groups For Kids

Jewish Family Service is accepting
participants for its free
October/November divorce support
groups. Geared toward elementary-
age children, the groups will meet
for eight weeks at Hillel Day School
in Farmington Hills and the JFS
West Bloomfield Center for Families.
The goals of the group are to help
children create a safe place to vent
feelings arul frustrations; normalize
and validate feelings related to their
parents' divorce; clarify the role (or
lack of role) children play in divorce;
and develop coping strategies.
The JFS Children of Divorce pro-
gram provides positive, proactive
programs for elementary-age chil-
dren of divorce, who are having dif-
ficulty adjusting to their family's
new circumstances.

Additionally, JFS has launched a
new Internet chat room aimed at
children and parents living through
divorce.
Participants can discuss concerns,
issues and strategies with a licensed
clinical social worker. Log onto
http://www.jfsdetroit.org and fol-
low the link to the chat room. The
chat room is open 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. As an added fea-
ture every Monday, a clinical social
worker will respond to children's
questions from 7-8 p.m., followed
by a session from 8-9 p.m. for par-
ents to ask questions.
To enroll a child in the divorce
support program or for information
on the chat room or traditional sup-
port groups, call Jennifer Goldfarb,
(248) 737-5055.
