Michigan Branch of the Women's
League for Conservative Judaism
will present its 1999 Women
Achievement Awards at a dinner 6
p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, at
Congregation Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses.
This year's honorees are: Martha

Alice Wirt (Bay City, Temple Israel);
Helen Bayles (Farmington Hills,
Adat Shalom); Bette Heidenrich
(Flint, Beth Israel); Rosalie
Rottenberg (Grand Rapids, Ahavas
Israel); Dr. Emily Hoffman
(Kalamazoo, Congregation of
Moses); Ann Weindruch Emerson
(Mt. Clemens, Beth Tephilath
Moses); Bernice Gill (Oak Park,
Beth Shalom); RonnaRoss
(Southfield, Shaarey Zedek);
Sharlene Ungar (West Bloomfield,
B'nai Moshe); and Rita Terebelo
(West Bloomfield, Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses).
Rabbi Benjamin J. Segal, Jewish
Theological Seminary scholar in res-
idence and president of the
Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies
in Jerusalem, will speak on
"Masorti-Judaism in Israel." The
Institute of Jewish Studies is the aca-
demic and educational outreach cen-
ter of Masorti (Conservative)
Judaism in Israel.
In Israel, Rabbi Segal served as
director of the Ramah Programs and
was chairman of the Masorti move-
ment. A resident of Jerusalem, he
wrote the book Returning: the Land
of Israel as Focus in Jewish History
and two study texts. He also has
published various articles on bibli-
cal, educational and Zionist issues,
including the Hebrew booklet "A
People and Its Land," which is the
Masorti movement's ideological
statement on its approach to the
land of Israel.
The Women of Achievement
Dinner is presented in cooperation
with the Torah Fund campaign on
behalf of the Jewish Theological
Seminary. The campaign is a source
of support for the Seminary. Linda
