Their son and daughter work with
them, too, and I'm going to meet
them all at the collection and get
them to help me understand and look
at this work.

by the dozen. Escanaba has
them by the gross"
JN: Is there any type of interview
subject you find hard to interview?
SS: Children are very hard to inter-
view. The challenge is on me to find
a question that can't get a yes/no
answer, or "way cool," or "awe-
,
some.'
I was better at it when our child
was younger because I was more used
to talking with little children and I
knew how to do it. He's almost 30
now, so it's tougher.
Also, I try to avoid politicians
because I don't think they'll ever tell me
anything that they won't tell 8,000 oth-
ers. It's not that I'm after secrets, but I
am after some form of interpersonal
communication. I think it's so hard for
them to get past the Rolodexes in their
brains, the computers that chug out the
prepackaged answers.
I like an exchange in an interview, a
sort of real colloquy, and I don't get
that from them.
There are always exceptions, of
course. I was in Rome a few months
ago, and did an interview with Cokie
Roberts' mother, Lindy Boggs, who is
U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican these
days but for years served i8 the House
of Representatives.
There's a politician who will think
out loud with you and really does
want to get her thoughts across as well
as her own personal agenda.

JN:
Is there anything else you want
us to know?
SS: Well, I am a very good Jewish
mother, and my 30-year-old son,
Joshua, is always looking for excel-
lent acting parts. Live theater or
movies — he loves it all. He'll prob-
ably be furious at me if you put it in
— no, he's pretty much used to me
by now. He's very good; he's sort of
a George Clooney type, if I say so
myself. 1-7
