ry and culture for its members, Rabbi
Wine said. "Although our format is
different, our commitment to the
understanding of the experience and
legacy of the Jewish people is a very
strong one."
The future of the movement
belongs in teaching leaders and rabbis
through the institute, he added.
"The growth of the movement
depends on our ability to train a sig-
nificant body of rabbis, leaders and
educators," he said. "There's no sense
in organizing a community if you
can't service them.
"I think there is no single Judaism
that can serve the entire Jewish com-
munity," Rabbi Wine said. "In a free
and open society, there is great diver-
sity. In the end we need a pluralistic
environment in which different kinds
of Jews can be served in accordance
with their needs."

Established by Rabbi Sherwin Wine
of Birmingham Temple in 1963,
Humanistic Judaism follows a non-the-
istic, human-centered philosophy com-
bined with a celebration of Jewish iden-
tity and culture. Jewish holidays and
life-cycle events are marked with cere-
monies, but not prayer. Holidays are
historically based, celebrated with
music, Jewish stories and such cultural
involvement as lighting Chanuka can-
dles, building sukkot and holding
seders. The Torah is considered a very
important part of Jewish history and
heritage, but is seen as literature and
rests in the temple's library.
