Southern-fried chicken; to Northwood
Inn on Woodward for the New
England Clambake every Wednesday;
to Charley's Crab on Pine Lake for
some terrific chowder; to Sinbad's in
St. Clair for a hamburger; to
Forbidden City on Second Blvd. for
some different Cantonese food with
its owner, Henry Yee, "mayor" of
Detroit's Chinatown ... to Trader Vic's
on Washington Blvd. for its chopped
sirloin Hawaiian, made with fried
banana slices and garnished pineapple
slice, and the Filet of Sole, Dali Dali,

HIDDEN AWAY in a little shopping
center on Long Lake Road at Livernois
was one of the most unlikely places for
gourmet dining that could be found
anywhere ... Mediterranean Kitchen had
been strictly a specialty store ... with
wines, champagnes and classic foods ...
regularly supplying restaurants with
cheeses, spices, oils, vinegars and other
needs ... Nine years later it was still that
... but a restaurant as well ... with seating
that consisted of only five tables and six
counter seats ... and in a class all its own.
FOLKS ENJOYED the good food
and reasonable prices at the Farm
House on Nine Mile Road in Hazel
Park ... owned by the Trambush sis-
ters, they waited on customers,
cleaned tables and went around mak-
ing sure everything was okay.
The Farm House got its name from
its beginning ... At one time, it was a
farm house, with cows and all ... The
sisters used to live there with their par-
ents, who came from Austria in 1917
... When the city finally told them to
get rid of the animals, they decided to
convert their house into a restaurant.
A TRIP TO LAS VEGAS years
back again revealed many former
Detroiters who had moved there ...
"Chappie" Shapiro, pit boss at the
Frontier ... "Bath House" Sam Rosen,
who had a bath house here years ago
on Beaubien and Alfred, night manag-
er at the Frontier ... Georgie Riff
headed baccarat at Caesar's Palace ...
Aron "Bananas" Herman, night man-
ager of pit bosses at the Dunes ... Nate
Glassman, night manager at the
Flamingo ... Stu Segal, pit boss at the
Tropicana ... Charlie Durst, at the
Tropicana baccarat table ... Sol "Little
Fish" Bromberg, dealing 21 at the
Aladdin ... "Dudgie" Yovitz, pit boss
at the Flamingo ... Moe Miller, casino
manager at the Flamingo ... Charlie
Harrison, executive vice president at
the Riviera ... Joe Bommarito, 21
dealer at the Sahara ... Johnny Ryan
(Irving Leib), dice table boxman at the
Stardust ... Charles "Big Tootie"
