Ever heard music performed on the
quena or zampona?
These woodwind instruments —
commonly played in the Peruvian
Andes — will be featured in a concert
introducing a new composition by
Mark Gottlieb and Benny Cruz, and
are intended to bring some genuine
south-of-the-border sounds to Un
Encuentro, a piece that fuses classical
and Latin influences.
Gottlieb and Cruz will be among
the performers in the concert, sched-
uled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18,
at St. Hugo of the Hills Church in
Bloomfield Hills. While both do vocals,
Gottlieb will play piano and Cruz the
guitar. Also on the program will be the
Greater Detroit Chamber Ensemble, a
group of 13 musicians, and the paint-
ings of West Bloomfield artist Nora
Chapa Mendoza, which will provide a
multimedia effect. Mendoza is a recent
winner of the 1999 Governors' Awards
for Art and Culture
"A lot of the music is upbeat rhyth-
mically," says Gottlieb, 48, a teacher at
Evola Music in Bloomfield Hills whose
varied composing style was last
brought to a local stage three years ago.
"I like that we'll be including authentic
South American instruments."
Un Encuentro, a Spanish phrase that
means "An Encounter," is a symphon-
ic song cycle for chamber orchestra
and soloists. It explores encounters
with people and nature and ultimately
seeks to foster greater understanding
and appreciation of the commonalities
and contrasts between differing cultur-
al backgrounds and experiences. A
portion of the concert proceeds will
benefit the Holy Redeemer Arts and
Cultural Center in Detroit.
Gottlieb, who grew up in a largely
Hispanic neighborhood in California,
believes one section of the program
has almost a klezmer sound as it's per-
formed by clarinet and flute.
This will be the second collabora-
tion of Gottlieb and Cruz, who were
introduced by Mendoza. Gottlieb was
asked to compose a song to commem-
orate the anniversary of a town in New
Mexico, where a friend was living, and
Cruz translated the lyrics into Spanish.
Gottlieb also composed a saxophone
concerto that has been performed at
Michigan State University, a piece for
the Renaissance City Chamber Players,
a work for National Public Radio, a
cello concerto for the Warren
Symphony and a string quartet for the
Canadian Broadcasting Corp. His next
work could be Scottish.
"I always wanted to play bagpipes,"
he says.
— Suzanne Chessler
