ERRATA, TYPO, ETC. Dept ...
For clarification on a Sep. 3 column
item about Harry Millman being
gunned down at Boesky's on 12th and
Hazelwood in the mid-'30s ... none of
the three men named were members
of the Purple Gang ... The others,
Hymie Cooper and Abe Butensky,
were wounded customers.
QUITE AN EERIE feeling ... but
such a good one ... as Joel Fisher
opens his Natural Food Patch store.
It is in the exact location that his
uncle and aunt, Fred and Margaret
Cohen, started F&M Distributors
abour 40 years ago ... at 221 W Nine
Mile Road, west of Woodward, in
Ferndale ... Joel was with Uncle Fred
and Aunt Peg 18 years ... Hard to
believe, even for him, that he is in the
same store that started- the discount
trend years back ... and that Joel is
also carrying discount health and vita-
min products.
ANSWERS TO QUERIES ...
Ram's Horn on 12 iv1iie Road, east of
Northwestern, was originally called
Egg Castle and then Southfield House
... This winter will be 20 years at the
site ... and customers say it has gotten
better than ever.
GOOD TO SEE former Detroiters
visiting here recently ... Sam Assik
from California and Sam Ambrose
from Arizona.
MEL BALL and Colours will be
the 16-piece big band at Orchestra
Hall's Classic Legends gala, Friday,
Sept. 17, at 7:30 p.m. ... Also on tap
for the colorful event to raise funds for
Orchestra Hall, will be the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra and Diana Ross.
I OFTEN WONDER why the
First Yiddish Open, held back in the
summer of 1976 at Knollwood
Country Club, was never continued.
It was so much fun ... Al Sklar got
a hole-in-one playing with Jay Kogan,
Harry Korman and Kopel Kahn.
It brought out 36 players and
raised money for the Jewish
National Fund ... The carts all bore
Jewish flags ... Ben Marks, chairman
and originator, continually circulat-
ed salami sandwiches, pickles, seltzer
and chocolate syrup among the nine
teams ... Ben also carried around a
tape recorder for the men to drive,
chip and putt to the music of
"Mamala," "Romania," "My
Yiddishe Mama" and other Jewish
tunes.
AS USUAL, Jimmy Launce does a
great job on WYUR Radio (1310-
AM) ... but folks would sure like to
see him in a dinner-theater play again
... maybe opposite Nancy Gurwin." fl
