Winkelman Fund For
Social justice C
ureated
reated
As a tribute to their commitment to cre-
ating a better society for all, the Stanley
and Margaret Winkelman Fund for
Social Justice has been established by the
Winkelman family to carry its name-
sakes' legacy into future generations.
Stanley Winkelman died Aug. 19 at
age 76 after a distinguished career in
retailing and leadership of many Detroit
civic and Jewish organizations.
The Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit will administer the
Stanley and Margaret Winkelman Fund
for Social Justice and its endowed pro-
grams. Trustees will design programs
that foster inclusion and opportunity for
all citizens in keeping with the
Winkelmans' vision and with the
approval of Margaret Winkelman, their
son Roger, and daughters Andrea Soble
and Marjorie Epstein and their spouses.
Following the urban riots of 1967,
Stanley Winkelman made the decision
to maintain his retailing chain's corpo-
rate offices in Detroit as a symbol of
shared commitment and connection.
He was a member of the Detroit
Commission on Community Relations
and was instrumental in founding and
shaping New Detroit as one of the
nation's most respected urban coalitions.
As a New Detroit activist, Winkelman
strove to accelerate the process of mak-
ing the Detroit Police Department more
representative of, and responsive to, the
city's African-American citizens.
