$1 Million In Grants
From Jewish Fund

Twenty programs that will expand
health and human services to residents
of metropolitan Detroit received more
than $1 million in grants from the
Jewish Fund, created in 1997 from pro-
ceeds of the sale of Sinai Hospital to the
Detroit Medical Center.
This is the fourth round of grants
from the Jewish Fund to augment
health and human services in the
Detroit area. Co-chairs of the General
Grants Committee are Robert Sosnick
and Mark Schlussel.
A total of $1,013,230 in grants was
allocated:
• Jewish Hospice Services and Sue
Marx Films,
$20,000 for
the develop-
ment of
Generation to
Generation,
an educa-
tional film
designed to
help Jewish
families talk
openly and honestly about death.
• Fresh Air Society, $40,000 for
expansion of Silverman Village, a camp
for children with serious emotional
impairments.
• Jewish Family Service, $74,797 for
the medical translation program, which
provides outreach and medical transla-
don for Russian immigrants.
• Jewish Apartments and Services,
$136,668 for resident services coordina-
tion, to help older adults continue to
live independently.
• Chai Lifeline, $50,000 for Kids
Kicking Cancer, a program in coopera-
tion with Children's Hospital that will
introduce karate to children with cancer.
• Community Living Centers,
$40,000 for a nutrition and exercise
program to benefit adults with develop-
mental disabilities. The program will
provide education to residents and staff
on nutrition, healthy eating and grocery
shopping, along with fitness programs to
maintain health and prevent disease.
• Commission on Jewish Eldercare
Services •COJES), $84,300 to establish
a Jewish Community Trust for older
adults with disabilities.
• Deaf and Hearing Impaired Services
Inc., $12,000 for Guide My Hand, an
interpreting program for individuals
affected by deafness and blindness.
• Detroit Initiative and Jewish

Community Council, $75,000 for
the Northwest Neighborhood
Health Empowerment Center,
which provides health education,
disease screening and disease pre-
vention programs.
• Detroit Medical Center/Sinai
Department of Psychiatry, $21,500 for a
Holocaust survivors program.
• Jewish Apartments and Services,
$40,700 for a New American program
administrator to assist Russian immi-
grants.
• Gilda's Club of Metro Detroit,
$30,000 for support groups, lec-
tures, workshops and social events.

care/hygiene program that provides
needed items to individuals affected by
poverty.
• National Bone Marrow Transplant

• Michigan Jewish AIDS Coalition,
$10,000 for AIDS awareness and educa-
tion in northwest Detroit.
• Michigan Board of Rabbis and
Jewish Community Council, $94,650
for clinical training for rabbis to expand
their spiritual counseling to individuals
coping with dying and death.
• Michigan AIDS Fund, $25,000 for
assisting AIDS/HIV service agencies to
strengthen their infrastructure and
capacity to deliver services long-term.
• Kenny Michigan Rehabilitation
Foundation, $35,000 for a program to
build ramps for individuals with physi-
cal disabilities.
• Jewish Family Service, $123,990 for
escorted transportation for older adults
and individuals with disabilities.
• Jewish Community Center,
Jewish Association for Residential
Care and Community Living
Centers, $49,625 for Open
Hearts/Open Doors, an educational
and recreational program for adults
with developmental disabilities.
