West Bloomfield
indsay became involved in the
Daniel Sobel Friendship Circle
after teen volunteers helped her
own family several years ago. Her moth-
er Beverly has debilitating multiple scle-
rosis and the volunteers hung out with
Lindsay and her brother to give her
parents some respite.
"Lindsay liked the idea of what they
did so much that she volunteered her-
self," says her father Roy. "Anytime they
ask, she's the first to go.
"
"Just knowing that I'm
helping someone
makes me feel good."
Sometimes Lindsay, 14, volunteers
as often as three times a week.
"It's always different. Hike develop-
ing a relationship with the kids," Lind-
say says.
She also helps out with her mother
and babysits a girl with a closed-head
injury and a friend's brother who has
Down syndrome.
"I don't think of it as a mitzvah; it's
just something I do and will keep do-
ing for a long time."
Most of the teen volunteers are
Orthodox and they have _lad an im-
pact on her. For example, she influenced
her family to keep kosher.
"Being Jewish is important."
