like Kovil where my family is from, I
am putting together a jigsaw puzzle. It's
like unraveling a mystery.
"Darren makes my face light up when
he walks in the door," says Holocaust
Memorial Center administrator Selma
Silverman. "He has such a great attitude
and is well-respected by the entire staff
here. You know, it takes an internal
strength and grace to be the only teen-
ager at an adult event.
An only child, Darren admits he's
always loved hearing childhood stories
about his elders. He frequently was
around older members of the family
and felt a close bond from an early age.
His mom, Bonnie, was a librarian in
Dearborn, so that also fueled his passion
for history and the written word.
You won't always find Darren
hunched over foreign-language books
in a dark, quiet room, however. At
Country Day he played violin in the
orchestra, participated in track and field,
and was an editor of the Day Times.
He also was a member of the state
champion Quiz Bowl team. He'll head
to Ann Arbor this fall to study at the
University of Michigan, where he
received U-M Regents and National
Merit scholarships.
Having studied French, Russian,
German and Yiddish, Darren has a
strong interest in languages and
linguistics, but is leaning toward a major
in biochemistry or pre-med.
Yet don't think that love of nostalgia
doesn't slip into Darren's relaxation time.
"I watch a ton of TV," he says. "Old
horror movies, vintage Nick at Night,
and I can quote dialogue from all the
Dragnet episodes."
For Darren King, ancient histories
and contemporary pop culture mesh
comfortably, and provide inspiration
for a lifelong avocation.
