While the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit is involved in the
Intranet program, it doesn't have a Web
site of its own; its self-imposed mid-
August start date has come and gone.
The Federation site could be as
much a portal to other Jewish Web
sites as providing information about
its own programs. The site will have
information on three Federation pro-
grams: Michigan/Israel Connection,
Young Adult Division and Pro-
Detroit, the latter a recent initiative to
get young adults involved in the
Detroit Jewish community. Volunteer
opportunities, calendars and news also
will part of the Web site.
"We've had it on the agenda of
things to do for four years, but got
serious about it six months ago," said --\
Howard Dembs, Federation's director
of communications who is researching
the startup of the site.
Part of the goal of the site is to
show that Federation, a fund-raising
and advocacy communal organization
that allocates money to many local
Jewish agencies and to Israel, can be
relevant to younger adults.
"It's a service to younger people in
the community" Dembs said. "We
need to make them more aware of us."
Another agency that has talked
much about starting up but hasn't got
there yet is the Agency for Jewish
Education of Metropolitan Detroit
and its Michigan Jewish Online
Education (MJOE) project.
"It's a b'nai mitzvah reference for
teachers and parents," said Judah
Isaacs, AJE executive director. Its a
b'nai mitzvah library on the Web."
The AJE and Federation program
entails hooking the 13 non-Orthodox
religious schools onto the Internet with
cable modems so the students don't
have to waste class time — which
comes at a maximum of four hours per
day — using a more old-fashioned dial-
up modem. The schools will be outfit-
ted with new computers, while Temple
Israel and Shaarey Zedek will have their
current systems updated, as they have
had them for five and two years, respec-
tively.
The project is being designed by staff
at the University of Michigan's depart-
ment of academic outreach and will cost
$493,000.
Content for the MJOE site,
wvvvv.mjoe.org is done, but officials
are waiting for Ameritech to wire the
classrooms for the Internet and for the
hardware to be delivered. Isaacs said
he expects the site to be up and run-
ning soon after the High Holidays. Li.
