trained himself to vocalize by listening
to and emulating recording artists he
liked. "This was before Beat'achon,
and I ended up not staying. When
Adam and Jordan Gorfinkel asked me
to join the new Beat'achon in 1991, I
accepted and stayed."
Schreiber, the son of Bert and Rita
Schreiber, had planned on becoming
an engineer and studied in Israel and
at Columbia University in New York.
Although he graduated from Yeshiva
with a technical degree in 1995, he
knew that music was for him and
began finding work playing the piano
and directing children's shows in
schools and camps. He was trained at
the keyboard by Fedora Horowitz, for-
mer artistic director of the Lyric
Chamber Ensemble.
For most of the group's other current
members, performing comes after very
different professional interests.
Gorfinkel works as a freelance writer,
devoting considerable time to DC
Comics. Chaim Birman is a mechanical
engineer who designs skyscrapers.
David Max is a computer engineer. Elie
Landau works for a Broadway produc-
tion company and manages a Shomer
Shabbat theater company. David
Matkowsky is a doctoral student in
political science at New York University.
"When we're in the city of residence
of a former member, that person gener-
ally performs with us," says Schreiber,
who has worked in Chicago with his
attorney friend Adam Fishman and
traveled to other towns as well. "We try
not to be choral sounding because we
want a pop style. Our CDs sell at
Jewish bookstores in many countries."
As Beat'achon gets ready to release
a third CD, which has Shabbat songs
Schreiber is trying to market secular
songs he has written on his own. He
had secular music experience singing
with another a cappella group, the
Columbia University Clefhangers.
"Being a professional singer always
has been a fantasy of mine," the
returning Akiva graduate says. "I was
in a choir at Akiva and sang at school
functions. This upcoming school pro-
gram won't be the first time
Beat'achon has performed at Akiva,
but it will be the first time the focus
will be on us. " I 1
