United Way
Grant To Aid JCC
The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit received an alloca-
tion of 5541,364 from United Way
Community Services to provide a vari-
ety of programs and services for people
of all ages in the 1999-2000 program-
ming year.
Funding comes from the United
Way Torch Drive, which benefits more
than 130 health and human service
agencies throughout Wayne, Oakland
and Macomb counties.
The allocation "helps us to enhance
our programming abilities so that we
can offer a greater variety of quality pro-
grams to people of all ages and interests
in the community," said JCC Executive
Director David Sorkin.
The money was allocated to what
the JCC has identified as problem areas.
These include: inadequate recreation
resources, children and youth in crisis,
disabling conditions, family and indi-
vidual stress, illiteracy and educational
disadvantages, inadequate child day
care, neighborhood instability/disinvest-
ment and problems of the elderly.
The United Way allocations will be
used by the JCC as follows:
"Inadequate recreation resources.
Money will provide health, fitness,
sports and recreation activities for adults
and children.
Children and youth in crisis.
Children will be offered day camp and
recreational activities.
Disabling conditions. Sports, the-
ater, camp and other opportunities for
inclusion will be made available to chil-
dren and adults with disabilities.
Family and individual stress. Funds
will be used to enhance relationships
-among family members and address
the ne—eds-of contemporary families.
*Illiteracy and educational disadvan-
tages. New Americans will continue to
learn English and get help adjusting to
their new homeland through workshops,
classes and socialization programs.
Inadequate child day care. With
the increased demand for child care
from working parents, funding will
provide infant/toddler babysitting
and pre-school programs.
Neighborhood instability/disinvest-
ment. A sense of communal spirit and
involvement can be encouraged by the
JCC through holiday programs, child car
safety events, family fun days and more.
*Problems of the elderly. Funding
for social, recreational, cultural and
health-related programs serve older
adults throughout the community.
