Road, over a display of tomatoes ...
"The management reserves the right
to pinch back."
FOLKS WHO couldn't find .
Cardinali's didn't feel bad ... they
weren't alone ... It was a little place,
just off Gratiot, on Mitchell, but the
food was wonderful ... Owners
Adolph and Antoinette Cardinali did
everything there ... and it was one of
the few spots in Detroit that prepared
food the way they do in northern
Italy, using no tomatoes -... Cardinali's
made its own wine and prepared all
dishes to order ... Those with patience
thoroughly enjoyed this quaint little
eating place that used to be called
Giulio's.
CALL IT FATE or whatever ...
back in 1981, Charlie Pappas,
owner of the former Rialto on
Woodward and Nine Mile, was sit-
ting at a table visiting with a hus-
band and wife when he was called
to the phone ... Shortly after, an
automobile came hurtling through
the window of his dining room
about 3 in the afternoon, throwing
the woman 15 feet and pinning the
man under a chair, which served as
a jack that saved his life.
BACK AROUND the turn of the
century, Roma Cafe still on Riopelle,
tucked north of the Eastern Market,
was a combination restaurant, grocery
store and home ... It was said that
politicians enjoyed the Roma's hospi-
tality and disregard for prohibition ...
But to keep their consciences clear,
they had the place raided.
THE CLOSING OF Win Shuler's
on W. Maple came as a sudden sur-
prise ... Deposits for 45 banquets had
to be returned ... leaving many in a
frenzied lurch ... It was sold as another
restaurant ... E.G. Nick's.
AT THE STAGE Delicatessen on
Nine Mile Road in Oak Park, song-
writer Sammy Kahn told of his life-
long ambition ... to do a show ... And
that it finally came true at age 63 with
Words & Music here at the Music Hall.
YOU NEVER SAW so many peo-
ple sober up so fast ... when manager
and host, Emil Tintea, was shot at the
Scotch 'n Sirloin on Greenfield and
James Couzens, 10 minutes before
closing.
IN 1976, Les and Sam Gruber were
willing to take a considerable amount
less than the original asking price for
their London Chop House ... The
famous downtown restaurant eventual-
ly was bought by Hughes & Hatcher's
Max Pincus and his wife, Lainie
with the Grubers' Caucus Club across
the street, also thrown in. 1_
