name of the cocktail lounge at the
Sheraton-Cadillac Hotel on
Washington Blvd., made over from
the Detroit hotel's former Cafe
Caprice ... It had barbershop chairs
and a shoe-shine stand ... No hair
cuts, but the Red Garter band helped
many cut up with some old Dixieland
favorites.
A "FOR MEN ONLY" baby show-
er was the only one I know of ... Tavy
Stone and Jack Ray gave it for Molly
Abraham, restaurant writer with the
Detroit News and later the Detroit Free
Press ... Today, Molly reviews eateries
for the Oakland Press.
THE SIGN ON Nine Mile Road,
south of Lahser, said "Paul's
Delicatessen-Restaurant" ... but a new,
lighted one replacing it on the build-
ing had a more familiar name,
"Boesky's" ... The deli was in the
shopping center there ... and opened
by Harry Boesky originally of 12th
Street and Hazelwood and later James
Couzens and Greenfield ... The spot
became Skandia, and then the Playboy
Club ... Today, the James Couzens site
is occupied by Shield's Pizza.
DIRTY HELEN'S, which opened
downstairs in the Leland House, Cass
at Bagley, was one of Detroit's most
unique and interesting night spots ...
with the decor itself an eye-opening
experience for lovers of antique mem-
orabilia dating back to the 1800s ...
Nobody that I know of ever did find
out where owner Dave Tann got the
place's name.
SAME WITH Dummy George's,
on West McNichols between
Wyoming and Meyers, owned by
attorney Larry Rattner ... It previously
had been called the Silent Woman.
NORTHWOOD INN on
Woodward and 11 1/2 Mile, showed
no employee partiality ... Its Gay '90s
Room had only waiters ... The main
dining room, only waitresses ... and
what wonderful service to go with the
excellent food.
THE 1938 MENUS from Boesky's
on 12th and Hazelwood, listing
corned beef sandwiches at 15 cents,
hung on a wall of Larry's Carry-Out
Deli on Middlebelt in Livonia ...
Besides delicatessen goodies, Larry's
also had things like Indian nuts and
pistachio nuts.
GREEK SALAD at the
-International Restaurant in Greektown
on Monroe was authentic all the way
... except for one thing that I could
recall ... the can of olive oil said,
"Made in Italy."

House of Foods on W. Seven Mile
