he attorney speaking of
separation of synagogue
and state and the judge
counting the number of
Jewish members of his court clearly
were not describing the American
legal system.
The two Israeli legal authorities
NArere invited by the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's
Partnership 2000 program to partici-
pate in a July 18 - 22 visit to the
Detroit area. They met with judges,
attorneys and legal experts to explore
common issues, share ideas and
compare legal systems in the U.S.
and Israel.
Yehuda Abramovitch, chief justice
of the District Court of Nazareth,
and .Esther Gopher, Northern
Region district attorney, traveled
-here from where they work and live
in the central Galilee, Detroit's part-
ner region in Partnership 2000. This
Federation program links Jewish
communities around the world with
regions in Israel.
Two years ago, Federation spon-
sored a judges and lawyers mission
to the region to explore their legal
community.
During their participation in the
exchange program, Abramovitch and
Gopher met with Detroit-area legal
groups, Jewish organizations and
touring local law schools.
Saying she "enjoyed learning
about both the similarities and dif-
ferences" in the two legal systems,
Gopher said she hopes to exchange
expertise on issues that will benefit
both countries. For example, Nancy
Deihl, deputy chief prosecuting
attorney of the Wayne County,
shared legal information on domes-
tic violence, stalking and child
abuse, which Gopher will use to
study the possible creation of new
Israeli legislation. The two visitors
also were captivated by a Detroit law
firm's computer research system.
In the next phase of the exchange
program, Judge Abramovitch said he
would like to see a Detroit-area
group observing in his courtroom,
to see the Israeli legal system in
action. I I
