ne of the great myster-
ies of life, which has
continued to befuddle
philosophers, scholars and the-
ologians alike, is why children
never want to sleep. Just ask
them. It can be midnight and still
they insist, "But why do I have to
go to bed? I'm not tired!"
Another vexing oddity is how
children's body temperatures can
seemingly change in a matter of
seconds. Driving along, you
have the windows open because
it's such a lovely morning. But the
children whine, "It's hot! I can't
take it any more! I'm going to
suffocate back here!"
Then, oh joy, you stop at your
destination, the beach, where
the sand, simmering under a
fiery sun, is hotter than a
jalapeno pepper. But the chil-
dren don't even notice it. And in
fact, when you suggest it's time
to leave because you've all had
enough heat for one day, they
look at you incredulously, as
though you have told them Bar-
ney just went to prison for mail
fraud, or 'N Sync is recording a
CD with country great Conway
Twiny, and may even lend their
name to his vacation center, the
