as freely as you once could, stairs can be a real prob-
lem. But there is a simple answer. The powered stairway

I love my
Stairway Lift!

It takes me up
and down the
stairs with the
push of a but-
ton. Call for
details!

delightfully titled "Twiny City."
Alas, AppleTree cannot solve all
the challenges of parenthood. But
we can give you some great ideas
to help you through those long sum-
mer evenings when children never
tire, or those long car rides when
children are always hot, or even
great afternoons (which, let's be
honest, are most of the time) when
you just want something new to do.
It's time for summer fun, with a
Jewish twist!

• Go back in time to those awful
1950s and host a Jewish beach
blanket bingo party. Have children
don their polka-dot bikinis, tease or
slick-back hair, and write and sing
(but not too loud, unless you don't
like your neighbors) their own
Frankie Avalon-like numbers, com-
plete with silly Jewish lyrics.
• Turn on the hose and have
each child squirt the water as high
as he thinks Jonah's whale could
blow its spout.

A Night Out On The Town

Comic Relief

For children, the most interesting
person in the world is a parent.
They love to hear about your work,
your frustrations and joys and espe-
cially your childhood (like when you
got in trouble).
If you grew up in the same city
where you're living today, take your
child for an evening ride to the places
you grew up. Show him the house
where you lived as a child, the ele-
mentary school you attendec, your
favorite place to get a soda pop.
Along the way, tell him what life
was like for you when you were a
boy or a girl: What did you do on
Shabbat? What was your favorite
Jewish holiday? What games did
you play with friends in the neigh-
borhood?

Remember those great Charles
Atlas ads in the back of old comic
books ("Stop kicking sand in our
faces!")?
Have children stage their own
Charles Atlas body-building contest
in your back yard. Challenge boys
and girls to come up with muscles
using something odd around the
house — stuffed socks, for exam-
ple, or hard boiled eggs. Ask each
to create an identity for, and history
of, a Jewish body builder: Max the
Muscleman, Charles Atlasburg,
Shmulie the Strongman.
And speaking of comics, here's a
great idea for older children. Use
white-out to cover all dialogue in a
comic book. When you're done,
ask boys and girls to make up their
own Jewish stories. The pictures
remain the same, but they have to
come up with the words.

Making Waves

It's time we award the Nobel Prize
to whoever designed the first kiddie
pool. Little children can spend hour
after hour here. If you want to move
beyond splashing and splishing,
consider:
• Creating your own Noah's Ark
(from an empty milk container, a
carved bar of soap, a large leaf)
and taking it to float in the pool.
Children will especially love it when
you make waves.
• Find ways to "part" the Red
Sea. Have children pretend they
are filmmakers, and ask them how
they would show God making the
sea divide.

This Is Rockin'

Indoors, the very idea of children
using paint is enough to send some
parents screaming in terror. But out-
doors, it's a whole different story.
That's why paints and summer go
together like Henny Youngman and
mother-in-law jokes. Buy your chil-
dren any kind of paints and some
decent brushes, then ask them to
paint favorite Jewish scenes on
large rocks. When the children are
done and the paint is dry, coat the
rocks with acrylic spray. The scenes
will stay even in the harshest of
