Metropolitan Opera in New York,
where he became its first artistic direc-

mer evenings conducting for the
Meadow Brook Music Festival.
The seasonal home of the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra also became a
life-changing personal setting as the
place where he met then-student oboe
player Suzanne Thomson, a Detroit
native who has been his significant
other for more than 30 years.

Stadium to conduct for the stellar
singers known around the world as "The
3 Tenors" — Jose Carreras, Placido
Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. The
day before, the dress rehearsal at the
Detroit Opera House will serve as a ben-
efit for the Michigan Opera Theatre.
Detroit is the fourth North

New York and Toronto — to host this
performance event.

together in 1990 in Rome with Zubin
Mehta conducting. It was a celebration
