lthough breast cancer is
more than a woman's issue,
it's only the ladies who will
tee up Aug. 12 at a charity
golf
outing
b at Tam O'Shanter
0
Country Club.
The grassroots planning for this
event began last year when Anita
Mellen lamented that she couldn't
join her 1997
winning team-
mates to compete
for a place in the
1998 Buick Pro
Am. This four-
some, with golf
professional
Frank Nabilo,
made history as
the first all-
female amateur
team to win a
Pro-Am event in
the tournament's
37-year history.
Anita was
diagnosed with
breast cancer in
1998 and spent
last summer
undergoing radia-
tion and
chemotherapy for
the disease.

"I kept play-
ing golf as much
as I could," said
Mellen, "and I used to drive around
on a cart with my very supportive
golfing buddies, realizing how much
this illness can alter one's life expe-
rience. One afternoon I blurted out
that we ought to do somethina that
will help breast cancer research b and
several of my friends blurted back
that they'd help me. The result is
the 1999 Women's Golf Classic
Think Pink for a Cure."
Mellen, a member of Tam
O'Shanter, proposed that the golf
course be made available for the
event. The volunteer committee had
already contacted the Barbara Ann
Karmanos Cancer Institute and the
agreement was that all proceeds will

benefit the new Alexander Walt •
Comprehensive Breast Center, which
opens this October.
"Tam has a long history of sup-
porting charitable golfing events,
some of the earlier ones benefiting
the Jewish War Veterans and last
month's Hank Greenberg
Invitational benefiting the Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame,' said Gary
Cohen, president of Tam. "Most
golf outings use the club on a

"The board unanimously approved
the proposal because we recognize
that breast cancer affects everyone in
the family and we like to think of
ourselves as a club that serves the
total family."
A full field of 140 golfers is expect-
ed. The cost, $150 each, includes
continental breakfast, golf, buffet lun-
