The grassroots planning for this event began last year when Anita Mellen lamented that she couldn't join her 1997 winning team- mates to compete for a place in the 1998 Buick Pro Am. The result is the 1999 Women's Golf Classic Think Pink for a Cure." Mellen, a member of Tam O'Shanter, proposed that the golf course be made available for the event. The volunteer committee had already contacted the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and the agreement was that all proceeds will benefit the new Alexander Walt • Comprehensive Breast Center, which opens this October. "Tam has a long history of sup- porting charitable golfing events, some of the earlier ones benefiting the Jewish War Veterans and last month's Hank Greenberg Invitational benefiting the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame,' said Gary Cohen, president of Tam.
