implied ... plus all the trimmings of

the Gay '90s.

ABOUT THOSE GREAT cottage
fries that folks used to get at Berman's

on Times Square, chef Charlie
Brennan would go through about 104
pounds (two bushels) of potatoes an
hour ... and did around 24 slices in
four or five seconds.
MAUNA LOA MEANS "Great
Mountain" and is the name of the T:\
largest and only active volcano on
the Hawaiian mainland ... The for-
mer popular restaurant on Grand
Blvd., named after this natural struc-
ture, had on exhibit actual displays
of hardened lava taken from the vol-
cano ... and head man Robert
Fenton was rightfully proud of the
magnificent splendor decorating the (
interior in true Polynesian fashion ...
However, not to be overlooked, were
the beautiful and authentic decora-
tions from other lands throughout
the world ... and the continental
food for which a completely separate
part of the kitchen was devoted ...
Mauna Loa was not only a
Polynesian restaurant in the truest
sense of the word, but also a delight-
ful experience in world-wide decor
and culinary enchantment.

place could ever give "The Cream" a <
run for its money on the pies ... but
Stafford's had a right to be mighty
proud of theirs.

Caesars Pizza, and partner with Mike
Illitch in Java Junction on
Woodward, said that pizza was origi-
nated by the Italians ... not the Jews,
as mentioned ... I do recall that my ti,
information came from the Italian
Historical Society.

WHEN JOHNNY MATHIS

appeared on The Mike Douglas Show
along with Mel Ball, he told of his
next recording being "People Who
not knowing that the song,
Nlarcer
both words and lyrics, were by Mel,
while he was appearing at Angel's
Hour Glass on W. McNichols.
AT THE MICHIGAN Palace,
?Morey Amsterdam told of the grizzled
old codger from Kentucky who con-
sumed two quarts of high-proof bour-
bon every day of his adult life and
lived to be 92 ... At his cremation,
said Morey, it took three days to put
