I, EVERY TABLE at Stewie Siegal's
Hello Dolly" on Second Avenue had
a telephone ... It was said that more
than one fellow had, over a phone at
"Hello Dolly," asked his future wife,
seated at another table, to marry him.
IF YOU WANTED Charlie Dubin
on the keyboard to play your request
at either Darbys or Kingsley Inn, the
best way to get it was not to ask for
the song ... Sounds crazy, but that was
Charlie ... Customers who knew just
made mention that it was a favorite
and he would eventually get around to
playing the tune.
WILKIN'S CORNER, with its
unusual setting, was a good place to
dine ... Located o: the corner of
Pontiac Trail and Orchard Lake Road,
it was simulated to look somewhat like
a trading post ... Today, the former
Meating Place, Treats, Buster's Bay and
Jake's On The Lake, is still looking for
someone to take over at the choice site.
HE ALWAYS WANTED to become
a full-fledged baseball club owner ...
and finally had his dream come true
when Jack Goldberg, owner of the
Stage Delicatessen in Oak Park, put a
team in the Oak Park Softball League.
A NUMBER OF YEARS ago,
Harold Levine of Ewald Steel asked
Boris Greisdorf if he would let a
young girlfriend of his daughter,
Marilyn (Sosnick) sing at Menjo's
Harold felt sorry for the young lady
and told Boris he'd pay half her salary,
which was about $125 a week ...
However, she only lasted a couple of
days since the band leader then, Joe
Oddo, said he couldn't play with her
singing ... Seven years later, Boris at
Menjo's still shook his head kind of
strangely whenever Barbra Streisand's
name was mentioned.
WHEN HARRY HARRIS was
singing regularly at the 24 Karat Club
on Telegraph and Six Mile, its manage-
. ment failed to rake advantage of the
songster's biggest claim to fame ... He
was Jimmy Durante's first partner in
show business ... Where did the name
24 Karat Club come from? ... Original
owner, Harold Wiggle was, for many
years, with Sidney Krandall Jewelers.
TOP STARS, good food, reason-
able prices and plenty of atmosphere
were among Bob Orth's ways of say-
ing, "C'mon aboard" The Showboat
on Washington Blvd., between
Lafayette and Michigan ... It was
Detroit's home of Dixieland jazz and
the place really jumped ... with the
likes of Alexander's Ragtime Band, Pee
Wee Hunt, Muggsy Spanier, Clyde
"Sugar Blues" McCoy, etc. ... Decor of
The Showboat was as the name
