JN: What do you enjoy most — con-
ducting, performing, recording? You've
conducted many of the world's leading
orchestras. Do you have a favorite?
PZ:: I enjoy it all — violin, viola, con-
ducting, teaching. Each musical activ-
ity in which I participate is just one
facet of the intricate process of music
making. It's all one big animal.
My favorite orchestra is the National
Arts Centre Orchestra, where I am just
beginning my tenure as music director.
I have a tremendous affinity for these
musicians, and I look forward to work-
ing with them on a long-term basis.
This is an orchestra of very high quali-
ty, and I hope to create an even higher
level of musical excellence and build
upon our longstanding relationship.
The English Chamber Orchestra
was my first professional conducting
experience, and I love the orchestra
very much. Likewise, I had a tremen-
dous experience in St. Paul, [Minn.],
and I believe I did a great deal for that
orchestra. I enjoy, very much, return-
ing to St. Paul to conduct and play,
and I also play chamber music with a
few of its members.
I love working with all orchestras
— the size doesn't matter to me.

JN:There a time when you were in
Israel with Barenboim, DuPre and
Mehta? Please tell us about that
experience.
PZ: Yes, I was in Israel for concerts
with Daniel Barenboim, Jacqueline
DuPre and Zubin Mehra in 1971-72.
My memories of Jacqueline DuPre are
particularly important to me, but I
prefer to keep them private.

JN: Why do you like Bruch's Violin
Concerto No. I? What makes it special?
PZ: The Bruch concerto is one of the
great romantic concertos of the 18th
century. It is wonderfully written for
the instrument. Great orchestration, too.
