18 Detroit Jewish News

The Detroit Jewish News won three
Simon Rockower Awards in the
American Jewish Press Association's
18th annual competition for
Excellence in Jewish Journalism.
Editor Robert A. Sklar earned a
first place in the Louis Rapoport
Award for Excellence in Commentary
and Editdrial Writing. The winning
entry, "Educational Alliance Holds
Promise In Quest For Jewish
Continuity," commented on the
future of the Agency for Jewish
Education of Metropolitan Detroit
following release of a consultant's
study of it last July.
Freelance writers
Amy Mindell and
Alice Burdick
Schweiger received
honorable mentions
in the David Frank
Award for Excellence
in Personality
Robert A. Sklirt-
Profiles category for
their looks at minis-
ter Marianne Williamson and actress
Sandra Bernhard.
"We're pleased the judges for the
Rockower awards continue to recognize
the quality of the journalism we provide
to our readers," said Arthur Horwitz,
publisher of the Detroit Jewish News,
which competes against newspapers 7
with a circulation of more than 15,000.'
"The range of our awards, from
opinion and commentary to personali-
ty profiles, shows a breadth and depth
of coverage that's a tribute to our edi-
tors and writers," Horwitz said.
The Atlanta Jewish Times and the
Baltimore Jewish Times, sister publica-
tions of the Detroit Jewish News, earned
three and two Rockowers, respectively-\
Competing against newspapers
with circulations of less than 15,000,
the Atlanta Jewish Times took a second
place and an honorable mention in
the David Frank Award for Excellence
in Personality Profiles category and a
first place for Excellence in Overall
Graphic Design.
Competing in the same circulatioc±\
class as the Detroit Jewish News, the
Baltimore Jewish. Times drew a first
place for Excellence in Photography
and an honorable mention in the
Boris Smoler Award for Excellence in
Comprehensive Coverage or
