of the highest quality."
Anne Regling, DMC senior vice
president of the northwest region and
lead executive for Sinai-Grace
Hospital, said, "A lot of the physicians
who left made those decisions prior to
the most recent six months. Once they
are here, they're very pleased with
what they see. Their response has been
overall very positive."
According to Regling, the $26 mil-
lion consolidation will save about $30
million a year in overhead. The hospi-
tal, which has 482 inpatient and surgi-
cal beds, also has purchased major
clinical equipment, including angiog-
raphy and radiology equipment.
Grace opened in 1948.
Shepherding visitors through the new
Sinai-Grace on Tuesday, Laura Kehler, a
clinical manager on the third floor med-
ical/surgery unit, pointed out a new
Middle-Eastern office, pastoral services,
sign and language translation services.
"Staff from Sinai is paired up with
someone from Grace until they feel
comfortable on their own," she said.
"It doesn't take long." The procedures
are the same, she added, they just need
to learn to find the supplies quickly.

July, and rabbinical service area are
being readied, Kehler said. Now
kosher meals are brought in from
Sinai for the less than 5 percent of the
patients who.are Jewish. 'The Sinai
Guild has moved into offices next to
the Grace Guild offices, and although
the two volunteers units will maintain
their own identity, they plan to work
together on many projects.
"With offices so close, I look for-
ward to very productive conversations
over coffee, bagels and doughnuts,"
said Rhea Heil, Grace Guild president.
"We feel the same way," said Rose
Rita Goldman, Sinai Guild president,
who agreed that "being a partner in
some projects would enhance benefits
),
to patients.
The only patients left at Sinai are in
two psychiatric units, and they are due
to move to Sinai-Grace in August.
Porter said the Sinai building would
be maintained while the corporation
tries to find a use for it, possibly as an
educational or residential facility.
Overall, Porter said DMC's interest
lies not in structures, but in having
the best people.
It is not the bricks and mortar that
determine quality medicine," he said.
"It's the brains of the people that work
here." El
