Eligibility for Nomination:
All Jewish communal
professionals employed by
Federation or its agencies
who have been working in
the Detroit Jewish community
a minimum of five years.
Criteria for Selection:
The recipient of the Berman Award must
demonstrate the highest professional stan-
dards in his/her chosen field. That profes-
sional must have:
• made a contribution to the general good of
the Jewish community
• demonstrated leadership and innovation to
his/her profession
• applied creativity, dedication, knowledge
and care to providing
services to

The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit has chosen Irwin
Alterman, Sharon Hart and Alan
Horowitz to receive its first President's
Awards.
The awards will be presented at the
JCC's annual meeting 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, June 17, at the D. Dan &
Betty Kahn Building, Maple at Drake,
in West Bloomfield. The meeting is
sponsored by Northern Trust Bank.
Established by JCC President Larry
Wolfe, the awards are to recognize vol-
unteers "for their outstanding leadership
and commitment and to honor those
whose involvement has enhanced a
Center program benefiting the entire
community:"
A Center vice president, Alterman
co-chaired the wintertime Seminars for
Adult Jewish Enrichment (SAJE) pro-
gram. The Adat Shalom Synagogue past
president is on the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit Board of
Governors and is former chair of two
Federation divisions.
Hart is chairing this year's annual
meeting and co-chaired SAJE. A Center
vice president, Hart heads the Education
Steering Committee. She's past president
of Adat Shalom and the Federation
Women's Campaign and Education
Department.
Hart and Alterman are being hon-
ored for their intensive efforts in bring-
ing SAJE to fruition. The program will
return next year.
A Center board member, Horowitz
chaired last year's JCC Maccabi Games,
the largest Jewish youth event in the
U.S. ais overall responsibilities included
finding housing for 3,000 athletes, plan- c/

ning social, athletic and cultural events,
and arranging transportation. The
Congregation Shaarey Zedek member is
on the governing board of the Jewish
Community Centers Association of
North America.

the Selection Committee. Names
of the nominees will remain
confidential, and they may be re-
nominated in subsequent years.

Michelle Rochlen of Farmington Hills recently returned from Israel where she par-
ticipated in Hadassah's select YoungWomen; - Mission. Chosen for her outstanding
leadership skills, she joined 25 other young women from across the country for a pro-
gram of seminars, study and sightseeing. The trip included a cooking class at
Hadassah College of Technology in Jerusalem.
