The Shir Shalom youth group helps build a playground at a Detroit school.

Working For Play

With a motto of "Helping kids to help themselves," Temple Shir Shalom's youth
group, with members in seventh-12th-grades, helped construct playground
equipment for students at Harms Elementary School in Detroit.
The May 22 project was coordinated by Janet Ray of Communities in Schools
of Detroit Inc. Ten members of the youth group helped spread mulch, paint
equipment, haul garbage and hang tire swings.
Describing the group's involvement in the project, Shir Shalom Education
Director Mindy Nathan said, "We're not just building a playground; we're build-

ing community."
