etc., bring many memories of the
great Big Band days.
Russ and the group play in front of
Carl's lobster tank in the bar/lounge
area ... and the wonderful quality in
his rhythmic blowing is still there ...
especially on magnificent standards
like Bunny Berrigan's "I Can't Get
Started With You."
GET WELL WISHES ... to
Barbara Robotnick, executive director
of the Zionist Organization of
America, Metro Detroit District, for
the past 18 years ... She's back home
after her two-month hospital stay ...
resting and feeling much better as she
regains her strength.
BLACK TIE BIGGIE gala celebra-
tion, Cirque de Karmanos, is Saturday,
May 15, at Compuware Sports Arena
in Plymouth ... The 17th Annual
Dinner for Detroit's Barbara Ann
Karmanos Cancer Institute, always a
major, fun-filled event, will transform
the Compuware arena, home of the
Plymouth Whalers, into a French-style
circus ... with music, dancing and
acrobatics creating an illusion of
romantic intrigue.
ONE OF THE more popular
shawarma sandwiches around is found
at Pine Land middle-eastern restau-
rant, on Farmington and 12 Mile ...
It's properly wrapped for easy eating
and very tasty, without grease ... The
pita, which ranks among the better
ones, are fresh and hot individual little
loaves that continually come from an
open hearth to tables.
CONGRATS ... to Allan Schwartz,
the "singing window washer" and
jokester ... on his 67th birthday.
IN THE RECENT Passover seder
at the Jackson prison complex, writes
Harriet Sarnoff Schiff, joining with
Rabbis Alan Ponn and David Nelson,
and Cantor Samuel Greenblatt, was
Rabbi Stacie Fine, of Congregation
Ahavat Shalom in Traverse City.
A former Detroiter, Rabbi Fine has
been involved with Congregation Beit
Shalom (named by Jackson inmates)
for 15 years ... delighting many of the
long-termers with her tradition when
visiting ... All stand together in a
blessing for peace.
During one of her first seders
with the Jackson prison complex
congregation, Rabbi Fine was shown
a startling piece of memorabilia ...
when an inmate brought over a
photo album with pictures of early
seders held there ... In the album she
saw a picture of her grandfather,
Irving Sarnoff, who used to attend
seders regularly with various Detroit
area rabbis. 7
