Gallery at the Detroit Zoo, with their
butterfly exhibit, is the one we think is
most interesting. I did not want to
have to create the ambiance and the
environment. They also have an audi-
torium, and she will be able to dance."
Their synagogue, Shaarey Zedek,
was never a location they considered
for the party, even though they would
have been able to have many more peo-
ple than the 140 limitation of the Zoo.
"The synagogue wasn't interesting,
kosher food wasn't a priority, and it
would have been a party like five oth-
ers," says Brown. "I always enjoy going

they're not like everyone else's."
Another issue for the Browns: they
are not native Detroiters, and both
their families will be coming from out-
of-town. For some relatives, this will be
their first visit to Detroit. "We are
bringing people in from out-of-town,
and we wanted to show them a bit of
our city," Brown says.
Some choose a non-synagogue loca-
tion first because their synagogue or
temple is too small for the size party
they want to give, because the date is
already reserved or because the food
costs are too expensive for their budget.

Bloomfield, whose son, Jordan, a
Hillel Day School student, was bar
mitzvah at Shaarey Zedek B'nai Israel
last October. "I never considered hav-
ing a simcha out of our shut, ever. But
you make your first appointment with
the caterer, and we realized it would
be way out of the ballpark for us.
