service was at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek in Southfield, and was fol-
lowed by a kids' party at Cranbrook
Institute of Science in Bloomfield
Hills.
"There were a couple of reasons we
chose Cranbrook Institute of Science,"
Aviv says. "Stephanie has gone to
Cranbrook Schools, she has always
loved the Science Institute, and I
thouaht the exhibits and the hands-on
activities would be fun for the kids.
"We had a magic show in the audi-
torium, fortune tellers, tarot card read-
ers, a palmist, and la per, dancing by Star
Trax. Ultimately, I was very happy with
it, and Stephanie was thrilled."
Finding a venue to reflect the child
is often cited as a reason for a non-
synagogue location. A youngster who
is a sports nut might love a party at
Franklin Racquet Club or Joe Dumars
Fieldhouse, where guests can partici-
pate in a variety of sports activities,
have dinner and dance to a DJ.
Often, adults join for dinner and
dancing, creating a less-formal bar or
bat mitzvah celebration.
Other are seeking locations with
beautiful ambiance. At the Fusion
restaurant in Farmington Hills, cater-
ing manager Elaine Denton of
Unique Restaurant Corporation notes
that many people choose Fusion
because of its outdoor garden and
pretty atrium. "Fusion has a gorgeous
outdoor setting," she says. "We have a
perfect garden spot for an outdoor
wedding ceremony, or for a theme
party for a bar or bat mitzvah party.
"We have had things like a fabu-
lous carnival, where people brought in
games, and everyone had fun. We also
have an enclosed atrium that over-
looks our gardens, and even in the
winter it gives an outdoor feeling."
She says the atrium is a great spot for
receptions, and sweet tables for larger
parties.
Nancy and Greg Brown of
Bloomfield Hills were seeking a
unique venue for their daughter
Adrienne's bat mitzvah, which will be
June 5. Adrienne is an avid ballerina,
and the Browns wanted someplace
feminine and pretty to reflect her, as
well as a stage where she could dance.
"I took Adrienne with me," says
Nancy Brown, "and we looked at lots
of places. The Wildlife Interpretive
