the world to the state of tikkun, or
imperfection."
Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan explains
that the purpose of kashrut is to
make "the people of Israel aware of
its dedication to God as a priestly or
holy people.
It is these thoughts that link the
first half and the second half of the
parshah. Although today we do not
bring offerings to an altar for sacri-
fice, we can dedicate ourselves to
God and to holy service in a positive
way. Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan
explains that kashrut has con-
tributed to the perpetuation of the
Jewish people and the retention of
its way of life.
Like the priestly heritage of trans-
mission of sacred duties from father
to son, kashrut outlines for each fol-
lowing generation explicit physical
directions for a way to serve God in
a holy way. In observing kashrut or
any other mitzvah, one begins to
understand humility, discipline and
universal order. 7

ESSAY CONTEST

Conversations

"Through them that are nigh
unto Me I will be sanctified."
Judaism teaches that the greater
a man's knowledge or position,
the stricter the standard by
which he is to be judged and -
the greater the consequent guilt
and punishment if there is a
falling away from that
standard (S. R. Hirsch); do you
think that Nadav's and Avihu's
deaths were justified? What
about modern day leaders? To
what extent should we exact
punishment and for which
wrong doinas •
"Drink no wine nor strong
drink." In the Torah, drink is
forbidden when discharging a
sacred function. Why is the
restriction limited? Why does-
n't it also include "excessive"
drinking all the time? Why do
we emphasize drinking on holi-
days like Purim, Passover and
Simchat Torah?
Humility is considered an
important value. Think of
some ways to incorporate that
value in daily living.
