make "the people of Israel aware of
its dedication to God as a priestly or
holy people.
It is these thoughts that link the
first half and the second half of the
parshah. Although today we do not
bring offerings to an altar for sacri-
fice, we can dedicate ourselves to
God and to holy service in a positive
way. Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan
explains that kashrut has con-
tributed to the perpetuation of the
Jewish people and the retention of
its way of life.
Like the priestly heritage of trans-
mission of sacred duties from father
to son, kashrut outlines for each fol-
lowing generation explicit physical
directions for a way to serve God in
a holy way. In observing kashrut or
any other mitzvah, one begins to
understand humility, discipline and
