home, his religion is celebrated along
with the Catholicism of his wife and
the Buddhism roots of his two daugh-
ters adopted in Tibet.
"I practice Judaism by doing volun-
teer work in Nepal," says Bernstein, who
conducts the Passover service for his
Unitarian church. "I direct an organiza-
tion that works at creating educational
opportunities for Nepalese children."
Very different from his large-scale
reliefs is helping his wife, a botanical
garden director. She pursues a side-
line of designing jewelry, and he
makes the beads.
"I grew up in the city, and I now
have a nice life in a bucolic setting,"
says the artist, who has a horse, chick-
ens, dogs and cats. We are quite busy
maintaining gardens, working long
hours and taking great walks in the
surrounding fields."

"I work with only a part-time assis-
tant because I want to have total con-
trol of the reliefs," Bernstein says.
"Many of my stylistic compositions
and ideas are influenced by my favorite
artists, including Diego Rivera, Edward
Hopper and Thomas Hart Benson.
"They're all challenging and wonderful-
ly disturbing in their treatment of the
figure and the human condition."
Because Bernstein deals with day-
to-day living, he believes his Jewish
background influences his work. At
