year, Passover fell over spring break,
and my family took the opportunity
to go to Washington, D.C. Passover
was not forgotten, and a five-pound
box of matzah found its way into our
luggage. Somehow we managed to
keep Passover, while each day I would
complain about the great breakfast we
were missing at the hotel. I didn't
understand still. We were on vaca-
tion, but I could not escape.
One day during that trip, we went
to visit the U.S. Holocaust Memorial
Museum. Expecting to be bored to
tears, I trudged forward, acknowledg-
ing the consequences of family vaca-
dons. Upon arrival, however, I
became quickly interested. I walked
through the four stories, watching the
familiar tale unfold, but this time
there was a heightened sense of real-
ism. Looking at the pictures, wonder-
ing if any of the recorded victims
were my great-grandparents or my
great-uncles and great-aunts, I slowly
began to understand. In the course of
that afternoon, my position within
Judaism was firmly cemented. As we
walked out of the museum, I under-
stood why we were what we are.
Famished, my family and I began
walking towards the Lincoln
Memorial. On the way, we saw a hot-
dog stand. Kosher hotdogs, but with
buns, during Pesach. The irony was
funny, but it still left a hungry family.
Suddenly, my mother had an idea.
Being the resourceful woman she is,
she had matzah in her purse. As we
scraped each bit of bun from the hot
dogs, sliced them and placed them on
matzos, I finally understood why we
were doing this. As we sat down upon
the grass and began to enjoy our
kosher-for-Passover meal, I answered
the question with which I had
plagued my parents for years. This is
