MC Swimmer
Makes U.S. Cut

Facing greater adversity than a 10-
year-old should have to, Haley
Mitchell swam two national qualify-
ing times at the state meet just three
days after her father passed away.
At the meet in Rockford, March 5-
7, Haley swam a 29.65 in the 50-yard
freestyle, and 33.78 in the 50 back-
stroke.
"I thought I could do it in the 50
free, but I'd been two-and-a-half sec-
onds off all season in the 50 back,
and the time just hadn't gotten better
all season," said the fifth-grader from
Walled Lake Elementary School. "But
anything's possible."
Her father, Richard, passed away
on March 2 after a long bout with
cancer. The funeral was March 4 and
she headed to the western Michigan
city with her JCC Marlins coach
Steve Rosender, her aunt and grand-
mother the next day.
"It was hard sometimes," she said.
"Dad told me he'd have wanted me to
swim anyway."
The success is not news to Haley's
mother.
"I'm not surprised because I know
my daughter," she said. She was very
close with her dad, so for her to go
and do that well was great. He was
always bragging about her to anyone
who would listen."
Unfortunately for Haley, she won't
be able to swim at the national meet.
"I turn 11 on July 17 and the meet
is at the beginning of August," she
said. "But there's always next year."

Diver
FinAshes Ninth

Adam Grant, a West Bloomfield
High School senior, finished ninth
in diving at last weekend's Class A
state swimming and diving champi-
onships at Oakland University in
Rochester.
"I'd been diving well and am happy
with my season," said Grant, who fin-
ished fourth in the Oakland County
meet last month.
Grant had been hoping to place in
the top six, but finished 16 points off.
"Nine of my dives were really
good, but I missed two of my best
dives," he said. "It was kind of a fluke
because they had been automatic."
