ntil recently, "Maven: The
Virtual Know-it-all" was the
undisputed champion among
Jewish Web directories. But there's a
new kid on the block: The Jewish
Community Online's "Internet
Resources" page does a fine job of
making some sense out of the chaotic
vastness of Jewish cyberspace.
But JCOMM has been expanding
its nonproprietary Web presence as
well, and its new Jewish resource site
is a good example.
The home page opens with a
straightforward, well-designed screen
listing a number of categories, such as
arts and culture, education, family
issues, food, holidays, news and
"introduction to Judaism" educational
sites.
Click on a category, and you get
more categories — and then, a few
clicks later, lists of links to make your
Web navigation easy. It's like a special-
ized Yellow Pages for the World Wide
Web.
JCOMM boasts 2,455 links. That's
less than Maven and there are some

important omissions. But JCOMM's
search function is outstanding, giving
visitors a powerful way to explore their
interests on the Jewish Web. A search
on the word "parsha" turned up 13
links using JCOMM's search engine,
only four on Maven.
And JCOMM offers a clean home
page without Maven's advertising clut-
ter.
Which is best? It's a matter of taste.
Smart Jewish surfers will bookmark
both Maven and JCOMM and return
to them regularly.
