Getting Person
In Cyberspace

icroVoice's People-Voice Connector, the personals mainstay of The
Jewish News, has moved into cyberspace via JN Online.
While maintaining a presence in print, People-Voice Connector's
online version enables those placing ads to reach a broader audience. Users can
take advantage of the features unique to the electronic medium.
They may search the database for ads that match customizable criteria, which
can include age, level of education, ethnic background and smoking preference.
Registration is free although there are costs in placing an ad and using other fea-
tures.

Finding
True Love

Chabad Web site gives
Jews a place to find
their beshert.

LONNY GOLDSMITH
Staff Writer

Rabbi Elimelech
Silberberg of the Sara
Tugman Bais Chabad
Torah Center of West
Bloomfield is part of a
four-rabbi council
overseeing Mit Mazel,
a matchmaking Web
site that made its debut last month.
Silberberg has held singles
Shabbatonim where people would
come with the purpose of meeting
people," he said. "It was successful,
but we always want to expand what
)3
we clo.
Rabbi Dovid Eliezri of Bais Chabad
of Yorba Linda, Calif, came up with
the idea; so far, 22 people have regis-
tered their names on the site.
"We provide a matchmaking service
that maintains the honesty and integri-
ty of meeting a mate," Silberberg said,

Looking For Love

The Cha.bad movement's matchmaking Web site, Mit Mazel, is not only a
terrific concept, but the early returns show it to be a success.
With no "official" launch, 22 people have registered, as have two match-
makers and five sponsors
0.tviirk
that will make the connec-
tion for the members.
The site opens to a dedi-
and welcome
cation page, noting the site's
kic.koff of Jan. 12 as the
AI
yahrtzeit of the first rebbe of
Lubavitch, Rabbi Schneur
Zalman of Liadi, and the
yahrtzeit of the mother-in-
law of Berel Nadel, the site's
Web master.
The next page describes
1-'14•ER
the steps to membership:
find a sponsor and have the
sponsor fill out the sponsor-
ship form; fill out the
online membership questionnaire, which will be added automatically to the
online members' database; mail the signed sponsorship form with a one-
time membership fee of $36. When the payment and sponsorship form are
received, full membership is bestowed.
To find your beshert in the online members' database, seek the help of
matchmakers, if necessary. Then have the sponsors contact each other to
arrange a meeting with your beshert. Meet, and if your beshert wasn't really
the one, return to the member database. Searching through the site is that
easy as well. Everything is laid out in a simple, well-thought-out and well-
organized way. If looking for your Jewish mate, it may not get any easier or
safer than this.

"but with the element of privacy.
There are no real names or photos."
Rabbi Yossi Friedman in New York
and Kasriel Kastel of the Lubavitch
Youth Organization in New York
make up the advisory board with
Eliezri and Silberberg.
Before applicants can become
members, they must get a sponsor —
a rebbetzen, a rabbi, a Chabad shali-
ach (or registered matchmaker) — to
fill out a form and vouch for their
integrity.
"If you were to find someone and
were interested in meeting them, you
must go through your sponsor and
their sponsor," Silberberg said. "After
that, it's up to them."
The registration questionnaire takes
from 30 to 60 minutes to fill out.
Once complete, applicants become
pending members. They print out the

sponsorship form for their sponsor
and send it back completed with a
check for $36. Then, they are full
members.
Anyone can log onto the site and
see the pseudonyms that people
choose for themselves, according to
Web Master Berel Nadel of
Southfield. Members get to see the
sponsors so they can contact them.
Only the staff - sponsors, the four-
rabbi council, Web master and match-
makers - can see all the membership
information.
The first two people to gain mem-
bership, a man from Australia and a
woman from Oak Park, have hit it off
and may arrange to meet each other
face-to-face.
"We'll get registered with all the
search engines, and there are scores of
Chabad sites all over the world,"
