A Dasr At
Convention

BBYO's annual vacation
event is another success.

The Jolson gang warms up
their act for the song
competition.

LONNY GOLDSMITH

t the B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization's Regional
Convention, two things are
almost always certain: Jol-
son AZA will win for best cheer and
for best song. Infringing on their prac-
tice time is strongly frowned upon.
Savage BBG, trying to get into
Shiffman Hall to rehearse on Sunday,
Dec. 27, ignored the pleas and staged
a sit-in. Joey Marcus of Jolson decided
to take matters into his own hands:

carry out Savage members until they
left on their own.
"It's symbolic — we don't want
anyone to see us before we are on
stage," Marcus explained. "We had to
carry them out to show that we meant
business and when we say, leave the
room,' we mean it."
Jen Smith, first vice president of
Savage, tried to make a point to their
male counterparts.
"On Saturday, they came in and
wouldn't leave while we practiced for
cheer," Smith explained. "We tried to
retaliate."
Just another day at Regional Con-
vention (RC), the annual rite of
December for members of BBYO. RC
began on Thursday, Dec. 24, and

ended on Dec. 29. More than 350
teenagers from the metro Detroit area
— including Windsor — took part in
the event.
In following their motto of "small
but mighty," the Windsor-based
Yachad BBG sent four teens to
Regional Convention. Two of them,
Rachel Kamen and Tara Berger, took
the silver medal in the doubles table
tennis. Kamen played with a substi-
tute partner after Berger went home
early because she was sick.
"The visors intimidate," Kamen
said, showing off their neon pink
"Canada" eye shades. "They reek of
tackiness.
Marcie Neuberger and Yachad
chapter president Jessica Winbaum

joined Kamen and Berger.
One of the things that most
impressed BBYO Executive Director
Arnie Weiner at RC was the love and
acceptance that everyone showed for
each other. "What they've started to
do was to build a Jewish community
of their future," he said. "They will be
growing up together."
The camaraderie of the week was
easy to spot strolling through the
JCC. During an early Sunday morn-
ing Ruach BBG volleyball match
against Brice BBG, two interested
spectators found their way into the
JCC gym when they didn't have to be
there. Dan Lee and Jeff Shiffman of
Kishon AZA played the role of cheer-
leaders for Ruach.
