BORIS BERMAN from page 67

TASTE OF PARADISE"
in a restricted society I didn't want to
play only the music that has been
approved by somebody else and to be
careful about everything that I said.
"I came to Israel and immediately
found my place in the country in spite
of coming right after the Yom Kippur
War. I almost immediately started
concertizing and teaching at the Tel
Aviv University Academy of Music."
From Israel, Berman began travel-
ing the world, including spending his
sabbatical in the United States in
1979. While he continues to stay in
this country, Berman says he keeps
"strong connections with Israel, where
I perform and teach at least a couple
of times every year."
When Berman returns to Israel in
February, he will play a Prokofiev
piece he recorded with DSO conduc-
tor Neeme Jarvi and the Royal Con-
certgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam.
It has been named "CD of the
Month" by CD Review magazine.
"I count my performances with
Neeme Jarvi as some of the most
rewarding performances of my career,"
says Berman, whose work-related trav-
els often include his wife, Zina, a
research biochemist at Yale; son Ilan,
23, a law and international studies
graduate student at the American Uni-
versity in Washington, D.C.; and
daughter Daniella, 13.
Of Jarvi, Berman says, "It's a great
pleasure to be attuned to a conductor
in such a way that we can collaborate
and I can somewhat change my own
vision. We've performed a wide range
of compositions together in Europe
and Israel and with various orchestras
in the States."
Berman is translating his perfor-
mance-instruction interests into a
book that will be released in 2000.
Offering a non-traditional outlook to
piano performance, his book questions
the thinking about finger movement
before interpretation.
"My approach is that interpretation
in many ways determines finger move-
ment," says Berman, who has been
invited to lecture and teach master
classes in many countries. "Working
on the technical and practical aspects
[of piano playing] cannot and should
not be separated from working on
musical issues of interpretation." El
Boris Berman performs with the
DSO 10:45 a.m. and 8 p.m. Fri-
day, Jan. 8, and 8:30 p.m. Satur-
day, Jan. 9, at Orchestra Hall.
