MITZVAH DAY

ATTENTION

GmHEmpLoyEps.s.

wanted to know if any of the people
would be there from last year — par-
ticularly Albert. Albert made a big
/ --impression last year as the kids actu-
ally taught him how to play bingo.
I asked them what they liked about
going to Fleischman. They said, "We
like visiting with people who don't
have anyone to talk to and hardly have
any visitors. We like entertaining them
and making them happy.
Upon arriving, we dropped off
" - our coats, went to the lobby, and
who should they see but Albert. I'm
not sure if he remembered them but
they sure remembered him. They
were really excited to see him.
This year Ryan brought two of his
favorite magic tricks and performed
them for some of the residents.
Hayley brought colored markers and
blank paper and drew pictures with
two sisters, Mrs. Louis and Mrs.
Whiteman.
Later that morning, we played
bingo with the residents. Ryan and
Hayley got the chance to call the
numbers. Our table consisted of
Shirley Parsky, Ann Bernstein,
Brenda Reiss (who we met last year),
and Bertha Cohen. These women are
avid bingo players and we enjoyed
sharing the table with them. Ryan
actually had two bingos.
Then the kids wanted to visit
their great-great uncle Al Weiss who
lives in the Hechtman Apartments.
He will be 94 in January and the
kids think he looks really great for
that age. Actually, he does look great,
and I can't help but wonder about all
the changes he has seen in the world
during his lifetime.
As I reflect on the day I can still see
the smiling faces of my children and
the residents, who are at least 10 times
their age. They spent some very spe-
cial time together. I can only hope
that Ryan and Hayley will continue to
want to volunteer and make it a part
of their tradition with their children. I
also can't wait to have Ashley join us
in future years.
After we left the building I asked
the kids the same question that began
the day. What did they enjoy most
about today? They both said that
doing a mitzvah was what they
enjoyed the most. To test them on
that point, I asked them to explain a
mitzvah. They answered immediately
that it was "doing something nice for
someone without expecting anything
in return. L
