ditional puppy or kitten, says
Schreibman, do your homework. Talk
to a veterinarian. Read about
vari-
ous breeds and look for those known
for their even temperaments.
"Keep away from breeds that are
known for not having easygoing per-
sonalities," he cautions, mentioning,
in particular, pit bulls, Rottweilers,
and chows.
Schreibman and his family always
have had Great Danes as pets, and
other medium-sized dogs such as
Golden Retrievers, which are known
for their good dispositions.
When choosing a pet, Schreibman
suggests going to a reputable breeder
— and going without the kids.
"There's too much pressure if you
take the children with you when
you're first looking," he says.
Schreibman recommends that
puppies and kittens be chosen under
4 months of age and cautions about
biinging an adult pet into the home.
Look for an outgoing personality,
not too shy but not too aggressive.
"It's cute when a puppy nips you, it's
not so cute when it has.its full teeth,"
Schreibman says.
An animal that neither hides in the
corner nor runs right up to you is the
best bet — "one that looks at you,
sizes you up, and shows you its intel-
ligence."
There's no doubt that the right pet
can be a loving addition to any fami-
ly, says Rosenberg. "You can't dimin-
ish the benefits of enjoying the love
and affection you get from a pet, as
well as what a child learns from car- _
ing about another living thing,' he
says.
Borenstein rec-
ommends to
many fami-
lies that
they con-
sider a new pet when children reach
the age of about 5. "At that age, he or
she can help take care of the pet and
it can be his or her first responsibility
— feeding, brushing, walking, etc.,"
she says.
It's also important for children to
understand that animals need inter-
personal interaction. "Children have
to learn that a pet is not a toy. It
needs love and affection, but there are
also times when an animal doesn't
want to be played with. Recognizing
the needs of a living object is a valu-
able lesson for children to learn,"
Rosenberg says. Adds, Borenstein,
"Puppies see very young children as
litter mates and in their exuberance
could unintentionally hurt a child."
To make the transition easier for
everyone, Schreibman advises that
you don't bring a pet into the
home dur-
