the holidays when there is usually lit-
tle time and also lots of potentially
poisonous or dangerous objects
around. In addition, don't leave pets
and kids together unsupervised.
Finally, as much as you and your
children may want a pet, sometimes
it's just not a good match. In that
case, says Rosenberg, be ready to rec-
ognize that it's not working out, and
be prepared to remedy the situation
quickly.
And finally, says Borenstein, "don't
overlook mixed-breed dogs. They can
make very good pets and it can be
rewarding to save a puppy from a
shelter."

Gifts For
Pets
Whether
you have a
new pet or
want to pamper a
long-rime member
of the family, you
can find any number
of treats to perk up
their holidays. Among the
more unusual:
Three Dog Bakery in
Birmingham whips up batches
of all-natural dog treats in sev-
eral flavors with no added sodi-
um or sugar. "Of course, there
are no animal by products,"
said Michelle Meehan, pastry
chef and store manager.
There is even a Chanukah
sampler. For $12 your clog-can
sample four treats, including a
menorah, dreidel and Star of
David in peanut butter flavor-
ing based in whole wheat. Non-
holiday treats begin at $1, while
custom baskets can cost up to
$50.
According to Meehan, the
Birmingham store is the sixth
retail establishment in an 11-
store chain. There will be more
stores.
